It's a tremendous piece, and it is encouraging to see more and more of them showing up around the place. The John Robbins one in the same journal was also very interesting, partly because, despite his very positive attitude, it still betrayed that Western viewpoint on Iran that fails to fully understand the Iranian reality.

Kayhan Barzegar's assertion that regional security cannot be achieved without Iranian security, and regional insecurity will arise as a consequence of Iranian insecurity is about as apt and succinct as it gets.

I think the author is being naive about the domestic restraints on Obama and how foreign policy is made now. History shows that everytime the Iranians showed flexibility and made concessions, the demands on them were redoubled and the goalposts moved. The lesson is that if Iran acts defensively, the US only presses some more. In this John Bolton-esque world, it is all a zero sum game. You don't "get along", you "dominate and control". Since there is no external threat like the Soviet Union to keep us mindful, we fall victim to domestic ideologues and lobbyists for foreign governments. Obama is part of this system.
